Student Demands: "1 February 2017 Since the January 27, 2017 Executive Order banned citizens of seven Muslim majority countries from entering the Us, several members of Amherst College community have lived in fear and uncertainty. This discriminatory order unduly restricts the freedom of movement of these student’s,, staff and faculty; seriously damages their future educational and employment opportunities; and puts their basic well-being in jeopardy. Given this alarming threat to members of our community, the official statements released by President Martin did not meet the needs of those who are directly and indirectly impacted. President Martin's campus-wide email neglected to swiftly condemn the order as antithetical to the College’s values. Furthermore, the failure to guarantee concrete material and legal assistance also betrays the College's apathy towards the emotional and physical welfare of the affected members of our community. Amidst the chaos provoked by the order, the International students Office did not reach out to the distressed students. Once again, the international Students Office failed to live up to its stated purpose of "providing international students with immigration and visit advising, programming and support. The Office's repeated inability to meet the pressing needs of the college’s international students stands in direct contradiction with the college's stated mission to educate men and women of exceptional potential from all backgrounds." We have five demands: Within the next 24 hours, the college must publicly condemn the executive order, "Protecting the Nation from Foreign Terrorist Entry into the United States." Peer institutions including Boston University, Yale, Cornell, Harvard and Princeton have already issued clear condemnation of the order, to which President Martin's statement pales in comparison. Within on week, the College must provide concrete legal and material support to those affected, regardless of their specific legal status. This includes: Providing one-on-one legal consultation and representation for students, staff and faculty members who are directly or indirectly impacted by the executive order or whose citizenship status puts them at risk. Committing to provide legal aid for students, staff and faculty members who are, now or in the future, detained or prevented from reentering the US while traveling, included but not limited to emergency contact information for legal counsel. Committing to meet the housing, living and academic needs of students, staff and faculty members who are, now or in the future, unable to leave the United Sates as a result of the executive order 3. Within one month, the college must recognize the shortcomings of the International Student Office meeting its intended purpose. This include: investigating the office’s repeated failure to reach out to international students, especially in times of considerable and relevant policy changes. Hiring additional staff specifically trained and competent in legal matters pertaining to foreign nationals (The College must at least initiate the search within a month) Ensuring that the International Students Office be proactive and responsive to student input. 4. Given the likelihood of increasing uncertainty in the near future, under the current administration, the college must meet its own promise to its students by responding more quickly and proactively to changing policies. 5.The threats posed to members of the Amherst College community are part of a political paradigm shift that is national in scope, and peer colleges and universities have already condemned the action of the current administration and committed themselves to meeting the needs of their community members. Recognize this, the college must join in efforts to build a coalition of institutions that will collectively stand with those members of their communities impacted by these increasingly violent and racist policies. Until the College commits to meeting these demands, students will not cease their sit in at the Office of the President in Converse Hall. “ Music on Soundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/maxzwell

TEDxVLERICK 2017 - 25/04/2017, Flagey (Brussels) With “Rhetoric Trumps Content”, Dietmar Hertsen and Edward De Vooght will talk about how words are the most powerful tool we have… more powerful, than even facts. In an age of alternative facts, D&E draw our attention to the importance of HOW we say what we do. Dietmar Hertsen A failed suburban rap artist, kicked out of school at sixteen, Dietmar Hertsen has spent his teenage years listening to foul ganster rap. After a short stint as a butcher, he eventually went to university and became a chemical engineer. He fared so well in this habitat that he decided to obtain a PhD in quantum chemistry, which he will defend this summer. This story could be the plot for a subpar play, but the engineer missed the music. Most talks, speeches and keynote lectures lacked musicality and persuasion. Scientific conferences seemed to be temples of bad speech. Frustrated, embittered, convinced that public speaking was beyond broken, he almost gave up. Then Edward De Vooght stepped in. Together, Dietmar and Edward founded De Redenaar (The Orator) in 2015 to revamp public speaking and rhetoric. They sought and found the perfect mix of theatre, motivational guru sessions and university lectures. Based on classical rhetoric and new insights, they playfully show what speech can do. This hobby project soon outgrew a small room filled with a couple of friends. By now, they have taught hundreds of students, coached CEOs and helped to write major political speeches, with music. Edward De Vooght Cicero, characteristic shirts and a glass of Verdicchio. As a student Latin and Italian Literature and Linguistics at the University of Ghent, Edward De Vooght is enchanted by Cicero, inspired by classical rhetoric and passionate about language. He enjoys reading verses of D’Annunzio at sunset with a glass of Verdicchio. Fired up by the lack of good rhetoric in modern society, he also battles for the revival of eloquence. His goal is to arm students with rhetorical bullets, reinforce debaters with deadly comebacks and sharpen the blades of political speeches. Moreover, before entering the rhetorical battlefield, appropriate rhetorical strategies are in order. Therefore, Edward aims to establish a new rhetorical science, which studies verbal persuasion in a cognitive way. Theory without practice, however, quickly becomes an ivory tower. And that is where Dietmar Hertsen stepped in. Together Edward and Dietmar founded De Redenaar (The Orator). They teach students to speak persuasively, counsel politicians effectively and train debaters meticulously. Public speaking is Edward’s passion and speaking in front of an audience, wearing one of his characteristic shirts, has even become an addiction of his. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx

Click on the link http://tiny.cc/----GET-FREE-ADVICE Amherst-MA-Bankruptcy-Lawyers Free Consultation Amherst if you're buried under a mountain of debt and are in the process of filing bankruptcy, you probably feel like the little engine that could, trying to conquer your debt. . There are certain requirements, but generally, anyone meeting those requirements has a legal right to file. As soon as a petition is filed, all creditors are prohibited from attempting to collect on all debts listed in the petition until the Court either discharges you from these debts or determines that you are not entitled to such relief. Amherst MA Bankruptcy Lawyers can help you all the way. First, any qualified bankruptcy attorney will probably require you to fill out a questionnaire for them to review to determine whether or not bankruptcy is right for you. If it is determined to be your best option, the attorney will have to decide under which Chapter you will file. You will likely meet with the attorney on more than one occasion to answer questions, provide documents and for the attorney to answer any questions you might have. After the bankruptcy petition (legal papers filed with the bankruptcy court that commences your bankruptcy proceeding) is filed, you will be required to appear in court on at least one occasion, the Meeting of Creditors, for a Chapter 7 filing, and probably more than one appearance if your bankruptcy petition is a Chapter 13 filing (Meeting of Creditors and Confirmation Hearing). Chapter 7 is a liquidation proceeding under the United States Bankruptcy Code. In a Chapter 7 proceeding, a trustee appointed by the bankruptcy court will take custody of and sell off any of your non-exempt assets. The money received from this sale will be used to pay your creditors. Your debts are then discharged. This means that creditors are forever prohibited to try and collect on these discharged debts in the future. Certain debts, like taxes, alimony, child support, student loans, and debts that have not been listed in the Chapter 7 petition (as well as debts which have been incurred as a result of either an intentional tort or the defrauding or misleading of a creditor) are not dischargeable. This means that after the discharge, you will continue to be liable for these debts. get free advise from Amherst Bankruptcy Lawyers they realy can help you all the way. Incarceration does not treat addiction, it cultivates it. As NH and the nation faces a crippling opioid epidemic, Chief Justice of NH’s Superior Court Justice Tina Nadeau explains that if we want to increase public safety, reduce costs of incarceration and return offenders to the community as productive members, we need to invest in alternatives to incarceration. One alternative — drug courts — has proven very effective in treating the underlying conditions that result in criminal behavior. Tina Nadeau is the Chief Justice of the New Hampshire Superior Court. She was appointed to the bench in 1996 and began serving as Chief Justice in 2011. Prior to her appointment to the bench, she served as legal counsel to Governor Stephen Merrill. She began her legal career in 1989 as an assistant attorney general in the homicide division. In 2013, Judge Nadeau received the Caroline Gross Fellowship award to attend the Kennedy School of Government on Executive Leadership; the 2013 Eric Cogswell Achievement award, recognizing commitment to addressing the over-incarceration of offenders with mental illness; and she was the 2013 recipient of the Marilla Ricker award, presented by the NH Bar to women in leadership positions. In 2015 she received the Advocacy award from New Futures and the Wheelok-Nardi award from Greater Manchester Mental Health for her work advocating for those with mental health and substance abuse issues. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx

Come join the American Civil Liberties Union as we unravel the thicket of new technologies and laws that allow the U.S. government to surveil Americans in more intrusive ways than ever before. We will explore the latest news and trends in surveillance, reasons to despair, grounds to be hopeful, and ways in which you can help the ACLU's fight against government overreaching. Catherine Crump (@CatherineNCrump) s a Staff Attorney with the ACLU's Speech, Privacy and Technology Project. She specializes in free speech and privacy litigation, particularly regarding the impact of new technologies on First and Fourth Amendment rights. She is lead counsel in the ACLU's challenge to the government's suspicionless searches of laptops at the international border, and is litigating a series of cases challenging the government's claim it can track the location of people's cell phones without a warrant. Christopher Soghoian (@csoghoian) is the Principal Technologist with the ACLU's Speech, Privacy and Technology Project. He completed his Ph.D. at Indiana University in 2012, which focused on the role that third party service providers play in facilitating law enforcement surveillance of their customers. In order to gather data, he has made extensive use of the Freedom of Information Act, sued the Department of Justice, and recorded phone company executives bragging about their surveillance practices. Kade Crockford (@onekade) is director of the Technology for Liberty program at the ACLU of Massachusetts, where she quarterbacks the ACLU of Massachusetts' work challenging the growing surveillance state and defending core First and Fourth Amendment and due process rights. Kade is currently working on a long term project to document and challenge the militarization and federalization of state and local law enforcement, focusing on the procurement and deployment of advanced surveillance and weapons systems, towards the end of bringing local police back under local control. She built and maintains the dedicated privacy website www.PrivacySOS.org, which hosts the Privacy Matters blog. Alex Abdo (@AlexanderAbdo) is a staff attorney in the ACLU's National Security Project, where he litigates cases concerning the expansive surveillance policies of the post-9/11 era. For example, he was counsel in the ACLU's recent Supreme Court challenge to the NSA's warrantless wiretapping program; he is currently challenging the NSA's collection of all Americans' telephony metadata; and he is suing for release of the government's secret interpretation of Section 215 of the Patriot Act. Nicole Ozer is the Technology and Civil Liberties Policy Director at the ACLU of California. She works on the intersection of new technology, privacy, and free speech and developed the organization's online privacy campaign, Demand Your dotRights (www.dotrights.org). Nicole graduated magna cum laude from Amherst College, studied comparative civil rights history at the University of Cape Town, South Africa, and earned her J.D. with a Certificate in Law and Technology from Boalt Hall School of Law, University of California Berkeley. Before joining the ACLU, Nicole was an intellectual property attorney at Morrison & Foerster LLP. Nicole was recognized by San Jose Magazine in 2001 for being one of 20 "Women Making a Mark" in Silicon Valley.

Trump’s Justice Department is using it’s own Civil Rights Division to go after Affirmative Action. Cenk Uygur and Ana Kasparian, the hosts of The Young Turks, discuss affirmative action. Tell us what you think in the comment section below. https://tytnetwork.com/join/ “The news that broke last night that the Trump Administration would take a fresh look at affirmative action and potentially sue colleges and universities over admissions decisions perceived to discriminate against applicants based on their race renewed a long-simmering debate over who gets access to the nation’s elite colleges. Admissions policies that take race into consideration are most relevant at campuses where there are far more applicants than there are spots in the freshman class. There are about 200 colleges in the United States out of some 5,000 institutions that accept fewer than half the students who apply. To put that into perspective, those colleges enroll fewer than 10 percent of the nation’s undergraduates. Despite their small slice of the market overall, these institutions, from Harvard University to Amherst College to the University of Michigan, play an outsized role in American higher education. It’s not because the education is so much better at those schools; it’s because of the unparalleled network students connect to, through the parents of their classmates, alumni and eventually when they become alumni themselves. That’s why admissions to these places is so prized by many students and parents.” Read more here: https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/grade-point/wp/2017/08/02/trump-administration-is-taking-aim-at-affirmative-action-in-college-admissions-why-it-wont-fix-whats-broken-with-the-application-process/?utm_term=.30df44962270 Hosts: Cenk Uygur, Ana Kasparian Cast: Cenk Uygur, Ana Kasparian *** The Largest Online News Show in the World. **Fight Censorship on YouTube** AMHERST, Mass (TAD) -- The UMass community is reacting to news of an alleged rape outside the campus center last month. It happened back in the early hours of September 2, but word of the attack is just spreading across campus. Patrick Durocher, 18, of Longmeadow is charged with aggravated rape in the case. He allegedly attacked a female fellow student in the middle of campus, outside the north side of the Campus Center. It was the first weekend of the semester, and according to court documents, the victim was on her way home from a party between 12 and 1 a.m. The victim told police soon after leaving a North Pleasant Street party, she headed towards the Campus Center, where she heard someone ask where she was going. According to a police report, the next thing the victim remembers is allegedly being forced against a tree by Durocher. She says he bit her neck, forced and held her to the ground, and raped her.
