Student Demands: "1 February 2017 Since the January 27, 2017 Executive Order banned citizens of seven Muslim majority countries from entering the Us, several members of Amherst College community have lived in fear and uncertainty. This discriminatory order unduly restricts the freedom of movement of these student’s,, staff and faculty; seriously damages their future educational and employment opportunities; and puts their basic well-being in jeopardy. Given this alarming threat to members of our community, the official statements released by President Martin did not meet the needs of those who are directly and indirectly impacted. President Martin's campus-wide email neglected to swiftly condemn the order as antithetical to the College’s values. Furthermore, the failure to guarantee concrete material and legal assistance also betrays the College's apathy towards the emotional and physical welfare of the affected members of our community. Amidst the chaos provoked by the order, the International students Office did not reach out to the distressed students. Once again, the international Students Office failed to live up to its stated purpose of "providing international students with immigration and visit advising, programming and support. The Office's repeated inability to meet the pressing needs of the college’s international students stands in direct contradiction with the college's stated mission to educate men and women of exceptional potential from all backgrounds." We have five demands: Within the next 24 hours, the college must publicly condemn the executive order, "Protecting the Nation from Foreign Terrorist Entry into the United States." Peer institutions including Boston University, Yale, Cornell, Harvard and Princeton have already issued clear condemnation of the order, to which President Martin's statement pales in comparison. Within on week, the College must provide concrete legal and material support to those affected, regardless of their specific legal status. This includes: Providing one-on-one legal consultation and representation for students, staff and faculty members who are directly or indirectly impacted by the executive order or whose citizenship status puts them at risk. Committing to provide legal aid for students, staff and faculty members who are, now or in the future, detained or prevented from reentering the US while traveling, included but not limited to emergency contact information for legal counsel. Committing to meet the housing, living and academic needs of students, staff and faculty members who are, now or in the future, unable to leave the United Sates as a result of the executive order 3. Within one month, the college must recognize the shortcomings of the International Student Office meeting its intended purpose. This include: investigating the office’s repeated failure to reach out to international students, especially in times of considerable and relevant policy changes. Hiring additional staff specifically trained and competent in legal matters pertaining to foreign nationals (The College must at least initiate the search within a month) Ensuring that the International Students Office be proactive and responsive to student input. 4. Given the likelihood of increasing uncertainty in the near future, under the current administration, the college must meet its own promise to its students by responding more quickly and proactively to changing policies. 5.The threats posed to members of the Amherst College community are part of a political paradigm shift that is national in scope, and peer colleges and universities have already condemned the action of the current administration and committed themselves to meeting the needs of their community members. Recognize this, the college must join in efforts to build a coalition of institutions that will collectively stand with those members of their communities impacted by these increasingly violent and racist policies. Until the College commits to meeting these demands, students will not cease their sit in at the Office of the President in Converse Hall. “ Music on Soundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/maxzwell

Turow was born in Chicago, to a family of Russian Jewish descent. He attended New Trier High School, and graduated from Amherst College in 1970, as a brother of the Alpha Delta Phi Literary Society. He received an Edith Mirrielees Fellowship to Stanford University’s Creative Writing Center, where he attended from 1970 to 1972. In 1971, he married Annette Weisberg, a painter. They divorced 35 years later. He married Adriane Glazier in a private ceremony on May 29, 2016. The officiant at the wedding was humorist Dave Barry. Scott Turow later became a Jones Lecturer at Stanford, serving until 1975, when he entered Harvard Law School. In 1977, Turow wrote One L, a book about his first year at law school. After earning his Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree cum laude in 1978, Turow became an Assistant U.S. Attorney in Chicago, serving in that position until 1986. There he prosecuted several high-profile corruption cases, including the tax fraud case of state Attorney General William Scott. Turow also was lead counsel in Operation Greylord, the federal prosecution of Illinois judicial corruption cases. After leaving the U.S. Attorney's Office, Turow became a novelist and wrote the legal thrillers Presumed Innocent, The Burden of Proof, Pleading Guilty, and Personal Injuries, which Time magazine named as the Best Fiction Novel of 1999. All four became bestsellers, and Turow won multiple literary awards, most notably the Silver Dagger Award of the British Crime Writers' Association. In 1990, Turow was featured on the June 11 cover of Time, which described him as "Bard of the Litigious Age".[4] In 1995, Canadian author Derek Lundy published a biography of Turow, entitled Scott Turow: Meeting the Enemy (ECW Press, 1995). In the 1990s a British publisher bracketed Turow’s work with that of Margaret Atwood and John Irving, republished in the series Bloomsbury Modern Library. Turow was elected the president of the Authors Guild in 2010[5][5] and was previously president from 1997 to 1998.[citation needed] As the Authors Guild president he has been criticized for his copyright maximalist and anti-ebook stance.[6] Turow has often responded that he is not against E-books and does the majority of his own reading electronically. His goal, he said often, is to protect writing as a livelihood.[7] From 1997 to 1998 Turow was a member of the U.S. Senate Nominations Commission for the Northern District of Illinois, which recommends federal judicial appointments. In 2011, Turow met with Harvard Law School professor Lawrence Lessig to discuss political reform including a possible Second Constitution of the United States; according to one source, Turow saw risks with having such a convention, but believed that it may be the "only alternative" given how campaign money has undermined the one-man-one-vote principle of democracy.[8] Turow is a partner of the international law firm Dentons having been a partner of one of its constituents, the Chicago law firm of Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal. Turow works pro bono in most of his cases, including a 1995 case where he won the release of Alejandro Hernandez, who had spent 11 years on death row for a murder he did not commit. He was also appointed to the commission considering the reform of the Illinois death penalty by former Governor George Ryan. He was the first Chair of Illinois' Executive Ethics Commission. He served as one of the 14 members of the Commission appointed in March, 2000, by Illinois Governor George Ryan to consider reform of the capital punishment system.[2] Turow also served as a member of the Illinois State Police Merit Board 2000-2002. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scott_Turow Image By Nonie from Melbourne, Australia (A-Block at Alcatraz) [CC BY 2.0 (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0)], via Wikimedia Commons

1-25-17 Freedom and Justice for All? Civil Rights in the Age of Trump There are many questions and concerns surrounding the future of civil rights under the Trump administration. What are the prospects of a Muslim registry? What will be the future of marriage equality? Will refugees and immigrants have their status rescinded? Can Roe v. Wade be overturned? Will stop-and-frisk be enacted nationwide? Will there be a shift in the system of checks and balances? What protections does our constitution afford and what recourse is available to targeted communities? For an in-depth analysis of these issues and more, please join us for an interactive session with Professor Sudha Setty of Western New England University School of Law. SPEAKER BIO: Sudha Setty is the Associate Dean for Faculty Development & Intellectual Life and a Professor of Law at Western New England University School of Law, in Springfield, MA. She teaches Law and Terrorism, Comparative Constitutional Law, Constitutional Law, Civil Rights, Business Organizations and Contracts. Her scholarly work focuses on comparative analysis of separation of powers, rule of law and national security issues. Professor Setty’s recently completed book, National Security Secrecy: Comparative Effects on Democracy and the Rule of Law, will be published by Cambridge University Press early in 2017. Prior to joining the faculty of Western New England, Professor Setty was a litigator with the New York firm of Davis Polk & Wardwell, where she focused on antitrust and securities regulation matters. She served as defense counsel in civil, regulatory and criminal matters involving national security issues, including terrorism financing investigations and lawsuits, and a pro bono matter challenging sentencing guidelines for those convicted of terrorist acts. Professor Setty graduated as a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar from Columbia Law School and received her A.B. in History (concentration in comparative civil rights) with honors from Stanford University.

There are certain requirements, but generally, anyone meeting those requirements has a legal right to file. As soon as a petition is filed, all creditors are prohibited from attempting to collect on all debts listed in the petition until the Court either discharges you from these debts or determines that you are not entitled to such relief. Amherst MA Bankruptcy Lawyers can help you all the way. First, any qualified bankruptcy attorney will probably require you to fill out a questionnaire for them to review to determine whether or not bankruptcy is right for you. If it is determined to be your best option, the attorney will have to decide under which Chapter you will file. After the bankruptcy petition (legal papers filed with the bankruptcy court that commences your bankruptcy proceeding) is filed, you will be required to appear in court on at least one occasion, the Meeting of Creditors, for a Chapter 7 filing, and probably more than one appearance if your bankruptcy petition is a Chapter 13 filing (Meeting of Creditors and Confirmation Hearing). Chapter 7 is a liquidation proceeding under the United States Bankruptcy Code. In a Chapter 7 proceeding, a trustee appointed by the bankruptcy court will take custody of and sell off any of your non-exempt assets. The money received from this sale will be used to pay your creditors. Your debts are then discharged. This means that creditors are forever prohibited to try and collect on these discharged debts in the future. Certain debts, like taxes, alimony, child support, student loans, and debts that have not been listed in the Chapter 7 petition (as well as debts which have been incurred as a result of either an intentional tort or the defrauding or misleading of a creditor) are not dischargeable. **Fight Censorship on YouTube** AMHERST, Mass (TAD) -- The UMass community is reacting to news of an alleged rape outside the campus center last month. It happened back in the early hours of September 2, but word of the attack is just spreading across campus. Patrick Durocher, 18, of Longmeadow is charged with aggravated rape in the case. He allegedly attacked a female fellow student in the middle of campus, outside the north side of the Campus Center. It was the first weekend of the semester, and according to court documents, the victim was on her way home from a party between 12 and 1 a.m. The victim told police soon after leaving a North Pleasant Street party, she headed towards the Campus Center, where she heard someone ask where she was going. According to a police report, the next thing the victim remembers is allegedly being forced against a tree by Durocher. She says he bit her neck, forced and held her to the ground, and raped her. Trump’s Justice Department is using it’s own Civil Rights Division to go after Affirmative Action. Cenk Uygur and Ana Kasparian, the hosts of The Young Turks, discuss affirmative action. Tell us what you think in the comment section below. https://tytnetwork.com/join/ “The news that broke last night that the Trump Administration would take a fresh look at affirmative action and potentially sue colleges and universities over admissions decisions perceived to discriminate against applicants based on their race renewed a long-simmering debate over who gets access to the nation’s elite colleges. Admissions policies that take race into consideration are most relevant at campuses where there are far more applicants than there are spots in the freshman class. There are about 200 colleges in the United States out of some 5,000 institutions that accept fewer than half the students who apply. To put that into perspective, those colleges enroll fewer than 10 percent of the nation’s undergraduates. Despite their small slice of the market overall, these institutions, from Harvard University to Amherst College to the University of Michigan, play an outsized role in American higher education. It’s not because the education is so much better at those schools; it’s because of the unparalleled network students connect to, through the parents of their classmates, alumni and eventually when they become alumni themselves. That’s why admissions to these places is so prized by many students and parents.” Read more here: https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/grade-point/wp/2017/08/02/trump-administration-is-taking-aim-at-affirmative-action-in-college-admissions-why-it-wont-fix-whats-broken-with-the-application-process/?utm_term=.30df44962270 Hosts: Cenk Uygur, Ana Kasparian Cast: Cenk Uygur, Ana Kasparian *** The Largest Online News Show in the World.
